Excerpt from Six Discourses Concerning I. Election and Reprobation, II. Extent of Christ's Redemption, III. The Grace of God, IV. Liberty of the Will, V. Defectibility of the Saints, Vi. Answer to Three Objections

Section I. - After fame years (tudy Imet with one who feemed to be a Def/i, and telling him that there were arguments fuflicient to prove the truth of Cbrz'jt'ian Faith, and of the holy Scriptures, he (corn. Fully replied, Yer: Andjou fwill pram-your Doé'irine of tbe Imputation qforz'girzal Sin from the fame Scripture; intimating that he thought that doftrine, it contained in it, fuflicient to invalidate the truth and the authority, of the Scripture. And by a little refleélion' 1 found the itrength ofltis argument ran thus: That the truth ol holy Saipture could no otherwife be proved to any man that doubted of it, but by reducing him to fome abfurdity, or the denial of tome. Avowed principle of reafon. Now this imputation of Adam': fin to his poflerity, (o as to render them, obnoxious to God's wrath, and to eternal damnation, only becaufe they were born of the race of Adam, feemed to him as contradictory to the commoh reafon of mankind, as any thing could be, and (o contained as firong an argument againfl the truth of Scripture, if that doctrine was contained in it, as any could be offered for it. And Upon this account I, again tearched into the places ufually alledged to confirm that doétrine, and found them fairly capable ot Other interpretations. One doubt re. Mained (lill, whether Antiquity did not give fufi'rage for this doétrine and here I found the words of Vqfiu: very pofitive, that Eerie/fa Catbal ica fie [emper judicafvit, tbe Catbolic Cburcb always fa judged 5 which he endeavors to prove by'tefiimonies from Ignatius to at. Duflin. This (ct me on the laborious tafk ofpcrufing the writings of antiquity till that time, and upon an impartial (earth, I found that all the paint, he had colleé'ted were impertinent, or. At leali infufiictent to prove ll point; yea, I found evidence fuflicient of the truth of that which Peter du Moulirz plainly owns, tbatfrom tbe time oft/ye Apofller to St. Attttin's time, all the Ecdqflafiical Writer: [fem to write incauttou/l) oft/ti: Illa; ter, and to airline to what be (all: Pelagianifm. And of this havmg made a collefiion, l finiflied a treattfe of Original (in, in Latm. Which hath been compofed about twenty years, though 1 have not thought it advifable to publtfh it.
