Excerpt from The Golden Lute: And Other Poems

Is it imperatively necessary that a Poem whose scenes are laid in the Homeric period should be written after the manner of Homer? The critics of our day appear to decide in the affirmative but surely one is not bound to interpret life and character through the medium of another mind. Homer's survey was not necessarily exhaustive, and the fact that his poems shew no sign of cynicism is no proof that cynicism did not exist in his day.
